Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s good and pleasing will is. Romans 12:2
I’m not sure what made me think of this song, but I do know that after a month of having our world turned upside down, it is probably something we should do. The song was sung by Kenny Rogers and the First Edition in the late sixties. The name of the song is “I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in.”
These last few weeks have been a challenge, to say the least. Every day causes us to have new emotional and spiritual challenges that we might never have faced before. It’s funny how, when something is taken away, our human nature is to want it even more. As a friend of mine said, “It seems that because I’m not supposed to touch my face, it has itched more than ever.”
We know that as Christians we are not to respond as the world does, We must be careful because prolonged exposure to stress can cause us to conform to the world. Our nerves get on edge. Our complaining increases. Our excuses seem to multiply. Our emotional and spiritual well-being begins to deteriorate.
When we are dealing with spiritual health, the Holy Spirit is the one we must call on. He was designed to teach us truth. The fruits of the Spirit found in the fifth chapter of Galatians, verse twenty-two:love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control can have a hard time growing (Gal 5:22-23). They must be cultivated.
These times can cause us to struggle in these areas. We can easily fall into the trap of complaining or making excuses. Both of these are like weeds in our spiritual garden. Just as weeds can suck the water away from your natural garden, complaining and making excuses can suck the living water, which is Jesus, out of our spiritual garden.
Instead of using the song “I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in”, maybe I should use
“Search me, God, and know my heart. Test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the right way.” Psalms 139:23-24
LORD, help me to be pleasing to You. May I glorify Your Name.
